The Commercial & Industrial Real Estate Industry sadly lost one of its early innovators in April, of 2008. Mr. Jack Heger, founder of The Heger Company (formerly J.W. Heger Company and Heger Realty Corporation) passed away at the age of 94.
Jack was born and raised locally in El Monte to a family that had settled there in the 1860’s.
As a WWII Veteran, he saw military action in Europe as a forward observer with the armored artillery division. He was injured by gunfire and honorably left the Army in 1945 as a first lieutenant.
Shortly after, he returned to the family hardware business, this time as owner, expanding operations through the purchase of competing businesses in the Los Angeles area. In early 1953 he made the change to pursue his passions in real estate.
The Heger Company opened its doors shortly after in 1957. Mr. Heger along with a few other early sales associates developed the strategy of focusing on hiring associates with ethics based decision making and an unparalleled work ethic. This set the stage for an office which today now has a sales and support staff of over 30 people and a property management division directly overseeing a portfolio of over 5 million square feet of commercial and industrial real estate.
Jack was known for his keen investment sense, putting together various highly profitable partnerships which still exist today. At The Heger Company’s 50 Year Anniversary party, Jack commented that the same real estate principles apply today. He also fondly referred to his first commission - $15.00 for renting an old foundry building but that his best accomplishments in business came from building and sustaining life long relationships. The proof of this dedication was evident as late as Monday, 2 days before his passing, where Jack was in the office looking after clients.
Privately, besides being an accomplished violinist, Mr. Heger was an avid reader with the over 5,000 volume collection in his home library continually being expanded. He is survived by his wife Marion, two (2) sons, Joel and Jan, and four (4) grandchildren.
